discovering tea tree oil

About a month ago, my skin was freaking out.  As far as I could tell there hadn't been any real changes to my diet, stress level, skincare or makeup routine, etc., yet I was suddenly experiencing the worst acne and sensitivity I can remember in recent years.  None of my normal go-tos were making any difference.

In a desperate attempt to find anything that might help, I turned to Google.  I happened across an article about the benefits of tea tree oil, including its antibacterial properties that can help fight acne.  I did some further research and found that tea tree oil has been the subject of studies comparing its effectiveness to products containing salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, and tea tree oil fared well.

So for nearly a month now, I've incorporated Apothecary Extracts 100% Pure Australian Tea Tree Oil into my skincare routine.  When I ordered the bottle, it came with a "recipe guide" that shows many uses for the oil that I have yet to try.  So far, I've simply added a few drops to my toner, astringent, or moisturizer.  Adding it to my moisturizer has been my favorite.  I also applied the straight, undiluted oil to my skin one night, but I don't recommend that!
The good: My skin has cleared up in an incredible way.  I'll probably always have issues with acne, but my skin is softer and smoother than it's been in a really long time.  And I mean SOFTER.  The first few mornings after using the oil, I couldn't stop touching my face.  I was amazed how soft my skin felt.  I also love that this offers an alternative to standard acne-fighting products.  I'm allergic to benzoyl peroxide, so previously my only option was salicylic acid.  I started to find that my skin built up a resistance to the products and they lost their effectiveness over time.  Now, I can alternate between tea tree oil and products with salicylic acid to avoid developing that tolerance.

The bad: The smell of this oil is very strong, and it took me awhile to get used to it.  Now I hardly notice it.  Also, when the product warnings tell you to keep the oil away from your mouth, they're not kidding.  One night after application I realized too late that some of the oil had gotten onto my lips, and I was sick to my stomach all night.

If you're looking for a new skin care product, I encourage you to discover tea tree oil.  And guess what!
